Supports to Learners
Adult learners who improve their skills and make literacy and lifelong learning a priority have their lives positively transformed. Their confidence increases, they get better jobs, and they inspire others in their families and communities to do the same. LNS offers supports for adults who enrol in adult learning programs at NSCC and community learning organizations.
ADULT LEARNERS' WEEK
LNS highlights learners' stories. The learners share their challenges which allow us to identify how we can better support them on their learning journey. They also tell about overcoming their challenges and their successes. These success stories inspire others to return to learning.
This year, LNS did not host in-person writing workshops due to concerns around COVID-19. However, we were excited to offer a new online Adult Learners’ Week Writing Workshop with Author Jenni Blackmore on the LNS Znanja elearning platform. 21 adult learners registered for this workshop.
It was offered from March 22 to April 5, 2021 and included writing activities, videos and Zoom discussions. Learners were asked to send us their Literacy Changes Lives stories, which were published in the 2021 Adult Learners' Week eBooklet.
Charleen Gill-Gagnon
“Some of the best things about going back to school as a mature student is the desire and passion to succeed.”
Charleen Gill-Gagnon is a mature student who has worked as a nurse’s aid for over twenty years. She has returned to learning at NSCC to earn a certification that will improve her employability. “Going back as a mature student with a disability has its negative and positive aspects; however, I am up for the challenges it brings. I know what it takes, and I am willing to put the work into it.”
