PRACTITIONER TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION PROGRAM (PT)

The program consists of ten modules which ensure adult learners have access to well trained, certified practitioners who understand the adult learning process and can use appropriate teaching methodologies that address learning barriers. Eight practitioners were certified within the Practitioner Training and Certification Program from September 2017 to March 2018.

CAVITA PERSAD

"I would recommend the Practitioner Training Program to anyone interested in adult literacy."

Cavita Persad is an English language facilitator at Alderney Gate Library’s literacy program in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Her learners are mostly immigrants who have just arrived in Canada. The Dartmouth Learning Network was a major influence in her decision to enroll in LNS’s Practitioner Training Program. “After researching the PT program, I became curious about the many teaching techniques and strategies that I had not been aware of.”

As a result of completing PT, Cavita is able to address each learner’s unique and individual way of understanding. "PT is well structured to allow participants to identify ways to improve their teaching delivery while being aware of each learner’s needs and unique learning style.”

PD CONFERENCE FOR PRACTITIONERS

Our two-day Fall PD Conference was held in November 2017 in Truro. The program included a plenary, panel discussion and 19 sessions. These included diverse topics including ALP communications, preparing for GED math tests, teaching EAL learners, occupational health and safety, career development for learners, and introduction to GED (delivered in French).

LNS RESOURCE HUB

LNS has produced a new online resource website for literacy practitioners and adult learning educators who teach, tutor or mentor adult learners in Nova Scotia, and are employed by or affiliated with NSCC or a community learning organization. LNS Resource Hub allows practitioners to upload, share and co-develop teaching resources. Forums are provided on the website for discussion about resources and best practices.
