Twenty Years of Supporting Literacy in Their Community
Duncan Gillis and his Gillis Truckways Inc team played at the first NSPGI golf tournament held at Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck in 1998. They participated in every annual NSPGI golf tournament since then. NSPGI returned to Baddeck in 2017, and as co-chairs of the event, Duncan and his wife Beth acknowledged the need to support and promote literacy and education in the workplace.“As a business owner for the past 55 years, you soon realize you are dealing with many levels of education in the people you deal with," says Duncan. "Improving literacy and essential communication skills allows you to progress and to keep up. The best thing about NSPGI, besides all the fun we have on golf day, is being able to support those who wish to improve their lives.”
PGI GRANTS
The Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education (LAE) has been a major sponsor of NSPGI for more than fifteen years, and has made a yearly contribution of $40,000. This year, that contribution increased to $50,000. The contribution is distributed through the PGI Grants to community organizations funded by NSSAL based on criteria approved by LAE.
The purpose of the PGI Grants is to enhance and support the participation of adult learners in community programs. LNS received 18 applications for PGI Grants this year. All six regions are represented with one application from Cape Breton, four from HRM, four from Northern, three from South Shore, four from Strait, and one from Valley.
LNS provides licenses for Microsoft Office and Windows 10 for refurbished computers. Funding support is from LAE through the PGI grants.
