News From Literacy Nova Scotia
A Message from Jayne Hunter, Executive Director
Literacy Nova Scotia celebrated Family Literacy Day’s 20th Anniversary by attending the provincial Family Literacy Day celebration at the Mi’kmaq Native Friendship Centre in Halifax. We also held a family fun bundle raffle at the Truro Farmer’s Market - Laura Henderson-Yorke was the lucky winner. Thank you to all of the generous sponsors and to everyone who purchased tickets! LNS staff Gina MacCallum and her son attended and participated in the Enchanted Forest Natural Parenting’s reading event for children to discuss the importance of family literacy with parents and caregivers. Family Literacy Day® is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. January 27, 2019 was the 20th Anniversary of Family Literacy Day!

LNS is looking forward to holding two upcoming events in Halifax. The Adult Learners’ Week Celebration will be held on April 1st and the NSPGI for Literacy Gala Dinner and Auction will be held on April 30th. We have an online 50/50 Draw and a raffle on two Air Canada Economy Class round trip tickets to anywhere in North America which are both part of the NSPGI fundraiser initiative, sponsored by Lockheed Martin. Funds raised will be used towards our ongoing efforts to provide supports for adult learners and practitioners across Nova Scotia.

We are looking for five to six past or present learners to share their stories at the Adult Learners' Week Celebration in Halifax on April 1. Please contact us with names of potential speakers. Learners may also have the opportunity to share their stories by entering the iPad Mini Draw and applying for the LNS financial awards - applications for the learner achievement awards as well as the scholarship and bursary awards are available online.

Reminder that in addition to the supports to learners we provide, we also have supports for NSSAL-funded community learning organizations. We welcome applications for PD Fund opportunities, free refurbished computers through Computers for Schools, and for Information Technology (IT Fund). Don’t miss out on these opportunities!
