Call for Nominations to the Literacy Nova Scotia Board


Literacy Nova Scotia (LNS) is seeking nominations to fill a number of positions on its Board of Directors.

These positions will be filled at the next Annual General Meeting to be held on June 17, 2021 at 3:00pm. The Board of Literacy Nova Scotia includes six regional directors, three directors representing adult learners, one director from the business community and one director from labour. The persons nominated must be members of Literacy Nova Scotia and be in a position to support the goals and mission of the organization.

Literacy Nova Scotia embraces and encourages nominations of diversity including Indigeneity, Race, Gender, Immigrant Status, Sexual Orientation, and (Dis)Ability.

Skills Needed For the Board
LNS has identified the following skills as being an asset in moving forward to achieve the goals identified by our strategic plan:

a) Individual(s) with fundraising or financial experience (or a willingness to learn)

b) Individual(s) experienced in promotion of literacy and essential skills in business

c) Individual(s) with direct experience in literacy and essential skills program delivery

In addition, as part of their role, Board members also support the overall business and program planning and strategic direction of Literacy Nova Scotia. Board members are active in promoting literacy and essential skills delivery, understanding and analyzing policy and knowledge sharing by providing supports to those involved in the delivery of literacy and essential skills programs in all their forms and at all levels.

According to item 41 of the By-laws, “the Regional representatives shall be elected from the members within that particular region prior to the Annual General Meeting”, and according to item 42 of the By-laws, “Learner, business and labour representatives be nominated from the membership and elected by the members prior to the Annual General Meeting”.

Regional Representatives: There are six regional representative positions open for new nominations or for renomination of the current representatives. *Please note: The current incumbents in 4 of the regions have agreed to let their names stand for re-nomination.

  • Northern Region (Colchester, Cumberland, & Pictou)
  • Cape Breton Region (Victoria, Cape Breton County)
  • *Strait Region (Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, & Richmond)
  • *Valley Region (Digby, Annapolis, Kings, East West Hants)
  • *South Shore Region (Yarmouth, Shelburne, Queens, & Lunenburg)
  • *Metro Region (Halifax, Regional Municipality)

Representatives of Labour and Business: There is one business representative position open for new nominations or for the re-nomination of the current representative. *Please note: The current incumbent has agreed to have their name stand for re-nomination.

Learner Representatives: There are three learner representative positions open for new nominations.

Nominations close on May 21 at 4:30pm. Please email nomination forms to Literacy Nova Scotia at info@literacyns.ca. LNS members may nominate themselves or another LNS member for board positions. The person nominated must submit an acceptance form for the nomination to complete the process. If more than one nomination is received for any of the positions, elections will be held electronically with deadline for voting June 1st at 4:30pm.
