Supports to Learners

Adult learners who improve their skills and make literacy and lifelong learning a priority have their lives positively transformed. Their confidence increases, they get better jobs, and they inspire others in their families and communities to do the same. LNS offers supports for adults who enrol in adult learning programs at NSCC and community learning organizations.

ADULT LEARNERS' WEEK

LNS highlights learners' stories. The learners share their challenges which allow us to identify how we can better support them on their learning journey. They also tell about overcoming their challenges and their successes. These success stories inspire others to return to learning. LNS hosted workshops across the province, including the writing workshops with Jenni Blackmore. Learners were asked to send us their Literacy Changes Lives stories to be published in the Adult Learners' Week eBooklet and to be entered in the iPad Mini Draw.

Marcel Southern

“The hardest thing about going back to school is adjusting with the new course load and not having the same income coming in. I would be truly excited if I won this scholarship, knowing all the things I had to let go of so I could go back to school.”

LNS presented the 2018-19 Scholarship Awards to adult learners at the Professional Development Conference for Practitioners in November 2018.

Marcel Southern is one of the LNS 2018-19 Scholarship Award Recipients. He received $1500 to help offset the cost of returning to learning. His former instructor at Yarmouth County Learning Network says Marcel is one of the most motivated learners she has taught. “As soon as he joined our adult learning program, he quickly impressed me with his attention to detail, intelligence and ability to work through abstract concepts and make connections. Marcel is an eager learner who expects a lot of himself and is willing to do the work in order to succeed and rise to the top. Marcel has consistently set realistic goals for himself and sees it through to the end. I am confident that whatever Marcel takes on, he will be a success.”
