Workshops for Boards
Under the project, Training for Success: Professional Development 2004-07,
Literacy Nova Scotia was able to provide workshops for volunteer
boards of community-based literacy organizations.
A PD survey for literacy practitioners, tutors, and coordinators
was developed and the results used to schedule PD offerings over
the course of the project. Online survey results can be
found here. Survey results were
analyzed and used when planning the 2005/06 PD schedule and offerings.
A provincial planning session for 30 community-based literacy groups was held on May 4, 2005. Those
who had to travel long distances were brought in the night before and a networking evening was
provided.
In conjunction with the planning session, 2 workshops were offered to the participants: Board
Liability facilitated by Dianne Paquet and Board Member Recruitment and Retention facilitated by
Max Chauvin.
A comprehensive board development strategy and program was put together with input from survey
results and the 40+ participants in attendance at the provincial planning meeting.
The online
survey results can be found at here.
The
provincial planning meeting flushed out recommendations for specific topics to be covered as well
as where and when to hold the sessions. This report can be found here.
In 2005, seven workshops were held in Liverpool, Antigonish, North Sydney, Cape Breton, Halifax and
Truro.
Max Chauvin facilitated the board development workshops
including Board of Directors' roles, responsibilities & obligations;
self evaluation; Basic Board and organizational policies; Board
recruitment and motivation; Board and staff relations; and Staff/performance
monitoring and evaluation. At the end of the workshop each network
board had a board manual, including the tools to develop and implement
the following: a general job description for board members and job
descriptions for each executive position; a public relations and
accountability plan; a recruitment plan for Board succession; Board
and Executive Director/Coordinator evaluation systems; a selection
of templates and samples will be available and will be reviewed
so that participants may choose those which best meet the needs
of their board. Participants received certificates.
Grant MacDonald offered up to 5 hours of follow up coaching
assistance to each network which requested this service
to help participants work on the plans developed during the workshop.
Five organizations received coaching and another 3 requested additional
resources only.
